A Woman Reads the Gospel of Luke is a woman's view of possible ways of reading the Gospel of Luke. In Luke's text scholars find worldviews reflecting the experience and importance of women in first-century Christian communities, since Luke, more than others, seems to have been influenced by women and gives women importance in his Gospel. This readable, clear, chapter-by-chapter commentary relies on traditional historical, cultural, and literary interpretations. Nevertheless, it breaks new ground in asking the questions: How can we understand what is read? And how is the text fulfilled even as we listen? from three points of view: that of a contemporary woman of today, that of a woman in the first century, and that of the women mentioned in Luke's Gospel. Those in ministry, in adult religious education groups, scholars interested in new ways of reading the New Testament, and all who are interested in women's perspectives in New Testament times will find that A Woman Reads the Gospel of Luke invites them to ask new questions that can be applied to personal, social, or faith aspects of their lives today.

In this provocative book, authors William Bole, Drew Christiansen, SJ, and Robert T. Hennemeyer argue that the core religious value of forgiveness can play a real, strategic role in the arena of international conflict and diplomacy. Recognizing that the religion plays a dual role in both nurturing peace and perpetuating strife, the authors help to move the debate beyond the negative, examining case studies.

He follows the pericopes of both the Roman Catholic lectionary and the common lectionary used by many Protestant churches. God's word contains multiple layers of meaning. In Jay Cormier's Table Talk, the reader will find new insights, see connections to real life, and hear a call to a more mature discipleship. Table Talk is more than a simple conversation. It is a call to live the Christian life more fully. Robert F. Morneau

Luke portrays the life and ministry of Jesus as a divine "visitation" to the world, seeking hospitality. The One who comes as visitor and guest becomes host and offers a hospitality in which the entire world can become truly human, be at home, and know salvation in the depths of their hearts. In The Hospitality of God Brendan Byrne, S.J., provides to-the-point commentary on those parts of Luke's Gospel that bring home to people a sense of the extravagance of God's love for them. Byrne stresses that those in Luke's Gospel who readily offer hospitality (chiefly the marginalized and the poor) find themselves drawn into a much deeper sphere of hospitality, the hospitality of God. Those who have difficulty sharing are challenged by Jesus to conversion so that they, too, may not be left out of the banquet of life to which God calls all human beings. Luke's Gospel, ever interested in the process of human transformation, explores this resistance to God's gift and the ways in which individuals need to be converted if they are to come to "knowledge of salvation."
